Local Discoveries LLC, shells jewels, sageworks designs, tangle, house of six cats, second star designs, fashion fair pdx, shopping, nw tshirts, aaron tratter, carmel corn, alberta, portland Or, pdx,

Tucked away off of NE Alberta is a place to satisfy the senses, discover local temptations that smell nice, look nice, and make you feel good about it! At LOCAL DISCOVERIES, creative entrepreneurs Julie Sage-Benois and Shelley Loring are soon celebrating their anniversary marking the storefront’s first year. Local Discoveries entices local fanatics, as well as out-of-town tourists alike seeking to indulge some of the finest soaps, candles, and jewelry that Portland has to offer, and that is just the beginning!

“We tend to create soap addicts” says Julie, who boasts the selection of 65-85 scents of soap available at a great deal of $5 each, 3 for $10, or 6 for $18. Another sought-after item are the 100% Eco Soy Lotion Candles, personally hand-poured in 1/2 pint Kerr Mason Jars that burn for 40 hours for only $6 each. Be sure to ask about the soap and candle “punch cards” on your next visit.

Now that we’ve got your sense of scent covered, let us delve into the sight of the great selection of hand-crafted jewelry. Among the 4 or 5 different artists who showcase and sell their designs at Local Discoveries, such as Shell’s Jewels and Tangle, Julie herself offers her own line called Sagework Designs. “We honor our commitment to quality and are very willing to work with people to create that special something,” says Julie, “and each of the jewelry artists do a great job and offer that same quality. We are dedicated to understanding their quality and craftsmanship, and dedicated to the success of each artisan.”

Among the other local products to be discovered include ceramics and pottery, glasswork, greeting card, wall art, iron works, and a growing section for children. Indeed there is more to tempt your sense of taste. Here you can find the perfect gift for anyone among the selection of gourmet jams, caramel corn, garlic pretzels, honey, and wild-harvested edible mushrooms!

Local Discoveries originally opened their doors on November 11th of 2009. Owner Julie looks forward to continuing to expand at Local Discoveries as they head straight into their second year with fresh ideas and positive energy. “We are all striving for the same thing. We want people to love our art like we do, and of course we want people to buy local whenever possible,” explains Julie, “and we want quality and craftsmanship to stay alive and to remain affordable for everyone to enjoy.”

Although she says they are hard pressed for space at the storefront, they certainly find a way to make things happen to involve the local community more. Shelley Loring’s jewelry line has been included in several fashion shows around town, and after it has been down the runway, the items return back to Local Discoveries for a special post-runway showcase event.

Earlier this year, Local Discoveries was picked as #1 on PortlandPicks.com. Keeping up with Local Discoveries is easy through either Facebook or directly to their website at http://localdiscoveries.org/. Julie remarks, “I love most everything in here… and yes, we have a few very interesting and unique things, but in reality we are keeping it real just like Portland likes it.”

Fashion Fair PDX Article on Shell's Jewel's and the Devonation Fashion show.

Shell’s Jewels featured at ‘Devonation’

When Shelley Loring designer of Shell’s Jewels heard about Devon Yan Berrong’s show ‘Devonation’ she took it upon herself to ask if he had a jewelry designer for the show, when he said no she jumped on the opportunity to make one of a kind pieces to accent his collection. With 7 years of experience and a love for all things jeweled, Loring began to design the perfect accessories in black and white for Saturday’s show at Candy.

Sexy Back Necklace (here) Wrapped Twice to Hang in Front

Loring had two main pieces for the show that she wanted to stand out as the ‘Devonation’ line walked the runway. First she designed a sexy back necklace adorned with crystals on a black chain that cascades down the back of the model. A first for Loring, highlighting someone’s back instead of front, but this necklace says sex and style as it hangs down the neckline. The back necklace is also reversible and can be worn in the front as a double chain if you, for instance, have a design on the back of your outfit.

Array Chain Necklace

The second main piece Loring designed for Yan Berrong’s collection is a waterfall necklace. An array of descending metal chain that starts smaller at the ends and grows longer in the middle. The necklace highlights a woman’s cleavage perfectly. Made with silver, gray and black chain this necklace will sure be a favorite of the night.

For ‘Devonation’ Loring mixed feminine and hard to create wonderful jewelry for the show. Her use of chain, metals, crystals and beads in colors of black, white and cream will accentuate the clothes perfectly. She has made beautiful bracelets with Brazilian banded agate and beautiful ‘S’ curved swan like metal, crystal and black earrings, just to highlight a few pieces. She will be showcasing her jewelry at the end of the show for viewers to look at and to be purchased.

Loring also makes custom jewelry for her customers and has done amazing rebuild work with jewelry once owned by the late Jimi Hendrix. She works with all types of beads, stones and metals and is not afraid of a challenge. Loring also makes men’s jewelry and has worked with leather and wood. You can find her work at Local Discoveries on Alberta or check it out at the ‘Devonation’ show at Candy on Saturday.

Local Discoveries in PDX Portland, Oregon

Good Karma Good Energy,

My energy for much of this whole last week and weekend has been and is focused much around a new store on Alberta called "Local Discoveries", as I am a marketer at heart as well as a jewelry designer (shells jewels, hmmm no vested interest there) and retailer at the store, I hold it dear.

This brand new store as of end of November has stirred up a buzz it seams, with two articles already written since opening and three on the way?, one from the Oregonian themselves who called just a few days ago!

What we are; (Local Discoveries) A group of like minded local artists bringing to the neighborhood and surrounding Portland area great things that are HANDMADE and LOCAL, some of the items in the store are re-purposed meaning that the materials for some of the purses, jewelry, aprons and a few other goodies have been saved from landfill death and made into beautiful new items people can use.

We have Pottery, 4 Jewelry artists, crocheted hats (some by youngsters), scarfs and bottle covers, notebooks with great glass pens, Leather and upholstered purses, Handmade birdhouses, Carmel corn and Garlic pretzels, wrap skirts, potholders and scrubbies, dehydrated mushrooms for soups, aprons, cards, artwork and pillows, wooden handmade toys, tons of glass pendants to be strung by us or you, 66 scents in goats milk soaps, candles, lotions and now Bath fizzies!

Our approach is to be a venue for local talent to bring forth their product to the retail world in such a format that is unique, interesting and reasonable to vend (we all know a consignment can charge 50 to 60 percent, what this does is causes a vendor to raise there prices so high the average person cant afford the items (thus the botique). We want to keep it real and homey and friendly, not stuffy not pretentious!

Various artists are in the store on a daily basis creating or bringing new things!

The store is ever evolving on a daily basis so pop in often as not to miss new things!
