Tucked away off of NE Alberta is a place to satisfy the senses, discover local temptations that smell nice, look nice, and make you feel good about it! At LOCAL DISCOVERIES, creative entrepreneurs Julie Sage-Benois and Shelley Loring are soon celebrating their anniversary marking the storefront’s first year. Local Discoveries entices local fanatics, as well as out-of-town tourists alike seeking to indulge some of the finest soaps, candles, and jewelry that Portland has to offer, and that is just the beginning!

“We tend to create soap addicts” says Julie, who boasts the selection of 65-85 scents of soap available at a great deal of $5 each, 3 for $10, or 6 for $18. Another sought-after item are the 100% Eco Soy Lotion Candles, personally hand-poured in 1/2 pint Kerr Mason Jars that burn for 40 hours for only $6 each. Be sure to ask about the soap and candle “punch cards” on your next visit.

Now that we’ve got your sense of scent covered, let us delve into the sight of the great selection of hand-crafted jewelry. Among the 4 or 5 different artists who showcase and sell their designs at Local Discoveries, such as Shell’s Jewels and Tangle, Julie herself offers her own line called Sagework Designs. “We honor our commitment to quality and are very willing to work with people to create that special something,” says Julie, “and each of the jewelry artists do a great job and offer that same quality. We are dedicated to understanding their quality and craftsmanship, and dedicated to the success of each artisan.”

Among the other local products to be discovered include ceramics and pottery, glasswork, greeting card, wall art, iron works, and a growing section for children. Indeed there is more to tempt your sense of taste. Here you can find the perfect gift for anyone among the selection of gourmet jams, caramel corn, garlic pretzels, honey, and wild-harvested edible mushrooms!

Local Discoveries originally opened their doors on November 11th of 2009. Owner Julie looks forward to continuing to expand at Local Discoveries as they head straight into their second year with fresh ideas and positive energy. “We are all striving for the same thing. We want people to love our art like we do, and of course we want people to buy local whenever possible,” explains Julie, “and we want quality and craftsmanship to stay alive and to remain affordable for everyone to enjoy.”

Although she says they are hard pressed for space at the storefront, they certainly find a way to make things happen to involve the local community more. Shelley Loring’s jewelry line has been included in several fashion shows around town, and after it has been down the runway, the items return back to Local Discoveries for a special post-runway showcase event.

Earlier this year, Local Discoveries was picked as #1 on PortlandPicks.com. Keeping up with Local Discoveries is easy through either Facebook or directly to their website at http://localdiscoveries.org/. Julie remarks, “I love most everything in here… and yes, we have a few very interesting and unique things, but in reality we are keeping it real just like Portland likes it.”
